Blondie’s first finds Debbie in a state of ironic chrysalis, keenly playing the tough, disaffected, girl-group front-woman prior to becoming a new wave, disco rap goddess. On this record, she’s all of her late-night AM radio Jersey influences. It’s not a super-hyper rock redux via the 70s ala Costello and The New York Dolls (well, “In the Sun”, “Kung Fu Girls” and “Rip Her to Shreds” come close); it’s mostly an homage (with synthesizers) coupled with a transition into something that didn’t yet exist.
