The hits just keep on coming as our favorite record labels continue to drop their Black Friday Record Store Day release schedules and imbue our Thanksgiving season with a little extra warmth and joy to throw on the turntable. Org's releases for this year are exciting, as usual.
Eramus Hall (who I recently wrote about at The Tracking Angle) has a release along with more from Charley Patton, Dave Grisman, and Johnny Bragg. Also included are two heavyweight jazz releases that I'm excited about. Cecil Taylor performing in Copenhagen in 1962, remastered by our old chum Dave Gardner and pressed at Pallas in Germany? Yes, yes, and absolutely yes.
Do you have an extra $5,493.66? Because if you'd like a copy of the original pressing of Sahib’s Jazz Party, that's what an ambitious record seller is charging for one right now (the only one available, btw). You could track down the ransom money to purchase that one, or just stand in line for Org's Black Friday reissue also remastered by our old pal Dave Gardner and also also pressed at Pallas in Deutschland.

Eramus Hall, Lost and Found (Transparent Smoke LP)
Eramus Hall was a soul/funk group from Detroit, whose debut “Your Love Is My Desire" became one of the most sought-after records of the modern soul era, coveted by DJs and record collectors alike. The group only recorded the one album for Westbound Records, home of funk heavyweights Funkadelic and Ohio Players, before moving to Capitol for their second and final album in 1984. After a definitive reissue of Eramus Hall's debut album, Org Music and Westbound Records have teamed up again to release a full LP worth of rare and previously unreleased tracks, including some of their earliest demos. Joel Martin, who produced the group’s output for Westbound, has overseen the mixing of the unearthed material, over four decades after he originally recorded them. The record will be pressed on color vinyl with a package that features never-before-seen photos and newly penned liner notes, exclusively for RSD Black Friday.
Various Artists: The Elephant 6 Recording Co. - OST (LP)
The Elephant 6 Recording Co. is the official soundtrack for the acclaimed documentary of the same name. The film highlights the legacy of one of the most storied DIY scenes in all of indie rock, birthing such bands as Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, and The Apples in Stereo. This soundtrack follows its 2023 wide release and contains music from the film, as well as a pair of brand new tracks from The Olivia Tremor Control’s forthcoming third and final record. The release is a carefully curated sampling of what has made this beautifully inscrutable scene so enduring and inspiring to musicians all over the world. The record comes housed in a custom die-cut gatefold jacket, and is available exclusively for RSD Black Friday.
Charley Patton, The Father of Delta Blues: Selections From Paramount Recordings
(Transparent Yellow LP)
Charley Patton is indisputably one of the most influential figures in the history of the blues, and among the most important American musicians of the 20th century. His recordings in the 1920s helped lay the foundation for the Delta blues style and continue to inspire musicians an entire century later. This compilation of recordings from the historic Paramount catalog showcases Patton's skills as a powerful and expressive vocalist, skilled guitarist, and dynamic performer. The collection, which has been remastered by Dave Gardner and pressed at Furnace Record Pressing, is exclusively available for RSD Black Friday 2024.
David Grisman, Dawg ‘90 (2LP)
Dawg ’90 is the debut release on David Grisman’s acclaimed Acoustic Disc label, originally released in 1990 on cassette and CD formats, and expanded with four additional tracks for a Deluxe Edition in 2013. The album is a collection of original tunes featuring the David Grisman Quintet and special guests Mark O'Connor and Matt Glaser on fiddle. It was nominated for a Grammy in the country instrumental category, Grisman's first-ever nomination for his own music. Thirty-four years later, the album is finally receiving its first-ever vinyl pressing with a deluxe 2LP release, exclusively for RSD Black Friday 2024.
Johnny Bragg, Let Me Dream On (LP)
Revered singer Johnny Bragg wrote and recorded classic 1950s R&B hits, such as “Just Walkin’ in the Rain” (as lead vocalist of the Prisonaires) and “Rollin’ Stone” (fronting the Marigolds), while serving time at the Tennessee State Penitentiary. For years, the recordings collected here lay dormant and unheard in a garden shed in Nashville. Unearthed and assembled to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s acclaimed exhibit Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues, these cuts are a rich trove encompassing previously unreleased songwriting demos, band rehearsals, and live recordings that, fortunately, Bragg preserved on tape in the 1960s and 1970s. It’s a time capsule of classic Nashville R&B, now available for the first time in any format, exclusively for RSD Black Friday.
Cecil Taylor, Live at The Cafe Montmartre (2LP)
Cecil Taylor Live At The Cafe Montmartre has been lauded by critics as a landmark performance, "among the greatest live recordings in jazz” (Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings). The recordings capture Taylor in peak form, supported by the great Sunny Murray on drums and Jimmy Lyons on alto sax, at the famed Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen on November 23, 1962. The set is among very few recordings documenting Taylor’s playing between 1962 to 1966. The set has been remastered by Dave Gardner for a double LP pressing at Pallas Group in Germany on audiophile-grade vinyl, including updated package artwork, exclusively for RSD Black Friday 2024.
Sahib Shihab,Sahib’s Jazz Party & After Hours (2LP)
Sahib's Jazz Party is an album by saxophonist/flautist Sahib Shihab, recorded live at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, around the same time that he relocated there in 1963. Shihab is joined by flugelhornist Allan Botchinsky, guitarist Ole Molin, drummer Alex Riel, and 17-year-old bass prodigy Niels Henning Orsted Pederson. The recordings showcase Sahib’s diversity and dexterity as a player, including his openness to the avant-garde style, expanding on the bop era playing he is known for. The album is presented here in a gatefold jacket with a bonus LP, including three tracks not available on previous vinyl releases — what we’re referring to as the “After Hours”. The audio has been remastered by Dave Gardner and pressed on audiophile-grade vinyl at Pallas Group in Germany.
